Juventus have sacked head coach Thiago Motta after less than one season in charge, replacing him with former player Igor Tudor.

The club announced the decision on Sunday following a series of poor results.

“Juventus FC announce that Thiago Motta has been relieved of his duties as men’s first team coach,” the club said in a statement.

Motta, 42, was dismissed after Juventus crashed out of the Champions League, Coppa Italia, and Supercoppa Italiana. Their recent 4-0 defeat against Atalanta, the club’s worst home loss since 1967, and a 3-0 loss to Fiorentina, left the team in fifth place, one point behind fourth.

Reports suggest that Juventus director Cristiano Giuntoli was disappointed in Motta’s performance and even told him he was “ashamed” of hiring him.

Giuntoli and CEO Maurizio Scanavino reportedly had a meeting with Motta but were not satisfied with his response, leading to the decision to sack him.

Juventus thanked Motta and his coaching staff for their efforts, wishing them success in the future.

The club confirmed that Igor Tudor, who last coached Lazio, will take over for the rest of the season. His future at Juventus will depend on whether he can secure Champions League qualification.

Tudor is set to lead his first training session on Monday, March 24.
