Zambian President Lungu collapses at Defence Day ceremony

Zambian President, Edgar Lungi, reportedly collapsed on Sunday, during the country’s 45th Defence Force Day Commemoration and Investiture ceremony.

Lusaka Times reported that the incident was confirmed by the Principal Private Secretary to the President, Simon Miti who quickly added that the president recovered immediately.

The statement read, “The President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, this afternoon experienced sudden dizziness whilst officiating at the 45th Defence Force Day Commemoration and Investiture Ceremony.

“The President wishes to assure the general public and all concerned citizens and the international community that he is well and has continued to discharge his duties as Head of State, Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Force.”

This is not the first time Lungu was seen collapsing at public functions.

The Voice of America reported on March 9, 2015 that the president was rushed after he slumped during an appearance at a Women’s Day celebration in the capital, Lusaka.

His then spokesman, Amos Chanda, had announced that Lungu has recuperated and was being treated at a military hospital where doctors have diagnosed him as suffering from malaria and exhaustion.
