President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s (retd.) tweet on the Nigerian civil war has been deleted by Twitter a few moments ago.
This move followed complaints from tweeps that the President’s tweet was a threat of war to a particular region of the country.
In recent times, gunmen have attacked various security facilities across the South-Eastern region of Nigeria, a region where many have been clamouring for a referendum to split from the West African nation.
The attacks have heightened the spate of insecurity in the country. Other challenges include farmers and herders crises, kidnappings, and other violent crimes.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the President warned that those fomenting trouble would be treated in the language they understood.
The president said, “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”
The statement was criticized by many, who argued that the president was only threatening the region with violence, as against his response to violent crimes in the northern region of the country.
Twitter has now taken action and deleted the tweet, though no further reason was given by the social media giant.
