Court sacks Ebonyi Gov Umahi, deputy, speaker over defection to APC
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday sacked Governor Dave Umahi, his deputy, Eric Igwe and Speaker of Ebonyi State Assembly, Francis Nwifuru, over their defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
In the judgement delivered on Tuesday, Justice Inyang Ekwo held that their defection was unconstitutional.
Umahi, a two-term governor was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The governor subsequently defected to the APC in 2020.
The sudden change in political baton led to a chain reaction that saw his deputy, the state assembly speaker and a handful of lawmakers jumped ship to the ruling party.
In his ruling, Ekwo ordered all the lawmakers who defected to vacate their seats.
