Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed his approval of the European Court of Justice’s ruling that deemed UEFA and FIFA’s attempt to block the proposed Super League unlawful.

While Klopp reiterated his opposition to the breakaway league, he welcomed the verdict, signaling a belief that football governing bodies should not have unchecked authority.

Following the ECJ’s decision, several English clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, released statements acknowledging the ruling and reiterating their previous withdrawals from the Super League. 

Liverpool followed suit with a statement, emphasizing their discontinued involvement and commitment to collaborating with other clubs through the European Club Association and participating in UEFA competitions.

“Yesterday’s ruling by the European Court of Justice does not change Liverpool FC’s previous stance on a proposed European Super League,

“Our involvement has been discontinued.

“We will continue to work with fellow clubs through the ECA and participate in UEFA competitions,” the Liverpool statement read.

During a press conference ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming game against Arsenal, Klopp affirmed his agreement with the club’s statement. 

He welcomed the ECJ’s decision, emphasizing the need for a collective understanding that FIFA, UEFA, and other football associations should not have unrestricted power. 

“I agree 100 per cent with that statement but I like the verdict anyway,” he said. “It looks like it that we finally get a bit of understanding that FIFA and UEFA and other FAs cannot just do what they want,” he stated.

While supporting the court’s ruling, Klopp maintained his consistent opposition to the concept of the Super League.

“Creating new, first we have to talk about in the future, putting in competitions with more games and no one has a real say in it. I like it that they can’t shake or not exactly do what they want but Super League, same opinion,” he noted.
