32 years after his assassination, Burkina Faso is celebrating the famous Burkinabé revolutionary, Thomas Sankara, with a new monument.
Many took to Twitter to share photos of his statue built on the very spot where he and his comrades were murdered on October 15, 1987.
Burkinabe President Kaboré visited the site with former Ghanaian President, Jerry John Rawlings.
Rawlings, who had come to power through a coup, was a great friend of the late Sankara.
Thomas Sankara was the President of Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987. A Marxist and pan-Africanist, he was viewed by supporters as a charismatic and iconic figure of revolution, and is sometimes referred to as “Africa’s Che Guevara”.

See some reactions on Twitter:
“Thomas Sankara” believed so much in women liberation.
Man once said that;
“he can hear the roar of women’s silence”

I’m so happy Thomas Sankara is being honored today. Fela’s best friend, but what about the Man that murdered him- Blaise Compraore? Is justice ever going to be served ? pic.twitter.com/RVY6FbwgRj

A week before Thomas Sankara assassination, he declared: “While revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas.

On my trip to The Gambia in December, I met this Lady from Burkina Faso at Juffere close Kunta Kinta Island. She walked up to me because of my Thomas Sankara T-shirt and asked if I know who is on my shirt? We ended up taking this selfies. Africa is a country.#Sankara pic.twitter.com/nVZ9yebASU

I truly wonder how Blaise Compaore feels every time he thinks about Thomas Sankara.

Thomas Sankara whose name evokes pride, pain and anger has been given a fitting memorial with a 5 metre statue in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Let’s join millions of Africans in celebrating with Burkina Faso on historical uneveiling the statue of Sankara. pic.twitter.com/mo6U2zHegs

In 2015, I hoped Buhari would become what Thomas Sankara was to Burkina Faso in terms of taking drastic necessary steps for devt. I believe nations like Nigeria need a bit of positive dictatorship. But naah… Buhari is just a plain out useless tyrant. https://t.co/g8vJJxRTmG

‘The revolution and women’s liberation go together. We do not talk of women’s emancipation as an act of charity or because of a surge of human compassion. It is a basic necessity for the triumph of the revolution. Women hold up the other half of the sky.’ – Thomas Sankara pic.twitter.com/Nj8ZJk2U88

“Thomas Sankara” once said “revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, but you cannot kill ideas”. What has Africa as a continent done in sustaining and bringing these ideas to life? Think about this pic.twitter.com/mlSrQZZl8o

Thomas Sankara is a rare African revolutionary leader whose gut and passion for a better society is missing in our current site tight leaders.

Rochas Okorocha would have built a more befitting statue of Thomas Sankara. You don’t make a legend look ordinary Burkina Faso.
— Ogunyinka Victor (@vogunyinka) March 5, 2019
Whenever someone mentions Thomas Sankara and omits the fact that he was a communist (ML) it is an injustice to his legacy. He didn’t do what he did and the people of Burkina Faso didn’t achieve all these things just because he was a “nice guy”. His politics informed his actions. https://t.co/nVV4BuwekX

I’m told a bronze statue of Thomas Sankara, a revolutionary and a visionary was inaugurated in Burkina Faso via African film festival. Today I know one thing only a revolutionary never dies! pic.twitter.com/Jri5bNTR0v

If there's a place I wish I was last week, it is Ouagadougou where the three leaders I respect: Thomas Sankara, Jerry Rawlings and Paul Kagame converged in the land of the upright men and women.

Dear Ladi from Oworo , just as Ebenezer Obey said 'a o le te aiye lorun'(one cannot satisfy humans). Not everyone was satisfied with Thomas Sankara no matter all the good he did, therefore your opinion on Buhari does not count as over 15m of us that voted him think otherwise

This is Thomas Sankara. He did not blame previous administration, Burkina Faso was very poor when he came on board. He made life easier for his people, he did not run to China for loan to construct 50km road in his country. Dare to be like Thomas Sankara. https://t.co/K9kMxAjKcn
