Former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Professor Jerry Gana, has announced that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan will run for the presidency in 2027 under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party, expressing confidence that Jonathan will return to Aso Rock.
Gana made the statement while addressing journalists after the PDP Congress in Niger State, held in Minna.
He argued that after Nigerians had experienced governance under two different administrations since Jonathan left office in 2015, they were now eager for his return.
“In 2015, Jonathan said his ambition was not worth the blood of Nigerians. After him, another President ruled for eight years, and now another has ruled for two years. Nigerians have seen the difference, and the difference is very clear. Nigerians are now asking us to bring back our friend, Jonathan,” Gana stated.
“I can confirm that Jonathan will contest the presidential election in 2027 as a PDP candidate, and we should be prepared to vote for him to return as President again.”
Gana described the PDP as a genuinely democratic and grassroots-focused party, stressing that its popularity stemmed from its commitment to policies centred on the welfare of the people. He noted that the party had always allowed the electorate the freedom to choose their leaders.
During the congress, Aliyu Halidu was elected as the new PDP Chairman in Niger State. Khadi Kuta retained his position unopposed as Secretary, while Mrs. Salome Ndakosu emerged as the new Woman Leader. In his acceptance speech, Halidu called for unity among party members, urging them to work together to ensure the return of a people-focused government in the next general elections.
Meanwhile, in Yola, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State echoed similar sentiments regarding the PDP’s readiness for the 2027 elections. Speaking during the party’s state congress, the governor said the PDP was undergoing restructuring aimed at restoring public trust.
“We are trying to birth a new PDP where everyone will believe, trust and have confidence in. We are really positioned, and we are ready for 2027,” Fintiri said.
However, the Adamawa chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken aim at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, criticising his comments on the recent terrorist attack in Wagga Mongoro, Madagali Local Government Area. In a statement released by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mohammed Abdullahi, the APC described Atiku’s remarks as “insensitive” and accused him of exploiting a moment of tragedy for political gain.
“Atiku once again proved that tragedy, for him, is not a moment of sober reflection, but a stage for cheap politics,” the statement read. “Instead of standing with the grieving, he rushed to issue a hollow statement riddled with inaccuracies.”
The party further alleged that Atiku had remained silent during previous attacks by Boko Haram in Adamawa, only to now speak out for political advantage rather than unity.
