Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher has revealed reservations about Liverpool’s readiness for a serious Premier League title challenge.
While the team has amassed points, Carragher questions the consistency of their performances this season. A pivotal test awaits Liverpool as they face Arsenal at Anfield, with Carragher acknowledging that a convincing win could alter his perspective.
Despite Liverpool’s strong points tally, Carragher highlights the team’s summer overhaul and potential positions that might need strengthening for a sustained title challenge.
The former Liverpool player emphasizes the need for a convincing victory against league leaders Arsenal to dispel doubts about their championship credentials.
“Throughout the season, when you look at the points Liverpool have got, they are one of the top teams in the country. But when you actually look at the performances I’m not so sure,”
“I’d probably just need a little bit more convincing and no better way to do that than getting a great result against Arsenal at the weekend, who are top of the table,” he said.
Carragher acknowledges that Liverpool may be slightly short of winning the title this season and hopes his doubts are proven wrong.
He suggests that this season might deviate from the standards set by Liverpool and Manchester City in the past, posing the possibility of a title race with lower points requirements.
While Liverpool is currently exceeding expectations, Carragher points out that supporters might have anticipated a title challenge next season with additional reinforcements.
“I think if Liverpool are to win the league it would have to be a season where maybe just it was mid-80 points rather than mid-90 [to win the tile].
“In most Liverpool supporters’ eyes, they are ahead of schedule in terms of being one point off top of the table at this point. I think people felt with the new midfield and almost this reboot of this Liverpool team under Klopp it might be more next season, maybe with a couple of extra additions and maybe a holding midfield player, maybe another centre-back, then you’d be in a position to really go for the title.
“So, Liverpool are over-performing, results-wise if you like. The points they have got at this stage is probably a big surprise for supporters, who were probably targeting a trophy and a top four finish.
“So, Liverpool are ahead of schedule, it’s just whether they can stay in that position, I think most people aren’t quite sure,” he stated
