The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has discovered 3,000 fake graduates who never attended any classes.
JAMB also criticized some institutions for giving illegal admissions, which has been a source of embarrassment to Nigeria.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, shared this information in the board’s bulletin during a meeting with the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State Universities.
“Some ‘graduates’ had never entered the four walls of a university owing to the endemic corruption in the system, but the board had documented over 3,000 of such cases,” Oloyede said in the bulletin.
He further explained that the illegal admission of candidates into tertiary institutions is both an embarrassment and a disservice to the nation. This issue has been a top priority for JAMB.
In December 2023, the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education ordered JAMB to present a list of institutions involved in irregular and illegal admissions. JAMB had previously warned students against accepting admissions from such institutions without full academic participation.
JAMB reiterated that all admissions for first degrees, national diplomas, national innovation diplomas, and Nigeria certificates in education must be processed only through JAMB.
This includes full-time, distance learning, part-time, outreach, and sandwich programs.
