JAMB to review 2025 UTME after widespread complaints, mass failure

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has ordered a review of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination following public complaints about technical problems and poor results.

More than 1.5 million out of the 1.9 million students who wrote this year’s UTME scored below 200 out of 400, causing outrage across the country.

In a statement on Monday, JAMB’s Public Communication Adviser, Fabian Benjamin, said the board had received an “unusual volume of complaints” since the results were released last Friday.

“We are particularly concerned about the unusual complaints from some states,” the statement read. “We are now reviewing the process to check for possible technical issues.”

Fabian said the review will look at all parts of the UTME process, including registration, the exams, and the release of results.

“To help with this, we have invited experts such as university vice chancellors, members of the Computer Professionals Association of Nigeria, and exam assessment bodies,” he added.

He said JAMB will take action if any problems are discovered.

“If we find that there were issues, we will take steps to correct them, as we have always done,” Fabian stated.

Meanwhile, many candidates are threatening to take legal action against JAMB over alleged problems during the exams.

Some students claimed they faced technical problems and saw different questions on their screens. Others said their scores were much lower than expected.

On social media, the hashtag **#ThisIsNotMyResult** has been trending as students and parents share their frustrations and confusion over the scores.

Speaking on Channels TV last week, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the low scores were due to JAMB’s strong technology to fight exam malpractice.

He said, “The computer-based test system has made cheating almost impossible and should be used for other national exams like WAEC and NECO.”

JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, also said the 2025 results were not new, explaining that similar results had been recorded in past years.

Still, many Nigerians are calling on JAMB to be more open and fair in how it marks and releases results. The board is under pressure to show that no student was treated unfairly.

The review is expected to begin immediately.
