The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is working towards establishing a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination centre in Ottawa, Canada, from 2027. The planned JAMB Canada UTME centre is expected to provide new opportunities for international candidates.

According to Premium Times, JAMB disclosed the plan following a visit by its Registrar, Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.

The centre would allow eligible Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to sit for the UTME without travelling back to Nigeria solely for the examination.

JAMB targets diaspora candidates

The examination body said the initiative would increase access to Nigerian tertiary education for Nigerians living abroad.

“The proposed centre will make it easier for eligible Nigerians in Canada and across North America to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely for the examination,” JAMB said.

It added that the initiative could strengthen ties between Nigerians in the diaspora and the country’s tertiary education system.

JAMB already conducts UTME outside Nigeria in countries including the United Kingdom, Ghana, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Côte d’Ivoire.

More than two million candidates participated in the UTME this year.
