The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has exposed a widespread fraud in Direct Entry admissions, revealing that only six out of 148 A-level results submitted to Bayero University Kano were genuine.
JAMB made this known in its latest weekly bulletin, stressing that its screening process aims to ensure that only valid documents are used for admission into tertiary institutions.
The board reiterated the responsibility of universities and other institutions to thoroughly verify certificates presented by applicants.
Following concerns raised by BUK, JAMB established the Nigeria Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System two years ago to tackle certificate fraud.
Through this system, the board was able to detect forged A-level certificates, including those from foreign institutions, that were used in Direct Entry applications.
“The university had reported that only six of the 148 results it verified were legitimate, with the remainder being forged,” JAMB stated.
More recently, JAMB uncovered 13 additional fake A-level certificates submitted to various institutions, some of which had already granted admission to candidates based on these fraudulent documents.
Those found culpable have been handed over to law enforcement agencies for prosecution, while JAMB has warned that any institution that admits students with fake certificates will be considered complicit in the fraud.
While NIPEDS has been instrumental in identifying these cases, JAMB maintained that universities must also conduct independent verification to curb the trend.
One of the most alarming cases involved candidates submitting forged Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination results from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in an attempt to gain admission into the same institution.
