JAMB declares free UTME for disabled candidates in 2024
The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has declared that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in 2024 will waive registration fees for individuals with disabilities.
Prof Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of JAMB, shared this information during a media briefing that marked the commencement of the 2024 UTME registration.
In a bid to provide comprehensive support, JAMB will distribute application documents free of charge to all Persons with Disabilities. As part of its commitment to creating an equitable examination environment, the board will furnish blind candidates with audio books. This decision stems from a recommendation made at the inaugural National Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education in Nigeria.
Prof Oloyede highlighted that the audio books, available in popular formats such as MP3, WMV, and WMA, will cater to all devices capable of streaming audio records.
He emphasized that this initiative aims to enhance comprehension for visually impaired candidates by offering a digital alternative to traditional reading materials.
“This will help the blind candidates to easily understand the subject/text,” he said.
Additionally, the registrar disclosed the removal of diagrams from questions for blind candidates. To further facilitate accessibility, an electronic copy of the reading text will be provided at no cost to all candidates participating in the 2024 UTME.
The registration period for the 2024 UTME is set to commence on January 15, with a fee of N6,200 for candidates opting out of the mock examination and N7,700 for those choosing to take the mock test during the registration process.
