Abdulrasheed Maina, the former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Force, has been hospitalised in Abuja after slumping on Tuesday evening.

According to a statement issued by his media assistant, Emmanuel Ekwe, on Wednesday, the incident occurred as Maina attempted to access his office premises. He lost his balance due to complications from an untreated knee injury, causing him to fall and hit his head on a staircase.

“Medical personnel present promptly administered first aid, after which they rushed him to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent medical attention,” Ekwe stated.

The former pension boss is currently under intensive care. Doctors have advised that arrangements for an air ambulance evacuation be considered if his condition does not stabilise soon.

“His family and medical team continue to monitor his progress closely. The family appeals to the public for prayers, understanding, and respect for their privacy at this critical time,” the statement added.

Maina was convicted in November 2021 by a Federal High Court in Abuja on money laundering charges involving N2.1 billion linked to pension funds. He was sentenced to eight years in prison, a conviction upheld by the Court of Appeal in May 2023.

He was released from Kuje Correctional Centre on February 25, 2025, after serving part of his term, benefiting from statutory remission for good conduct. Since his release, Maina has kept a low public profile.
