Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has linked up with the Super Eagles camp in Portugal ahead of Nigeria’s high-profile international friendly against Portugal’s Seleção das Quinas scheduled for next Wednesday.
The Hale End Academy product is closing in on a major career milestone, having accumulated 99 appearances for the Nigerian senior national team.
A feature in the upcoming encounter would see him become only the fourth player to earn 100 caps for Nigeria, joining the distinguished group of Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa.
Earlier reports had suggested that Iwobi could miss the friendly against Poland due to the red card he received in the closing stages of Nigeria’s international friendly against Jordan in March 2026. However, his arrival in camp has effectively ended doubts over his availability.
While 21 players were listed in the Super Eagles’ matchday squad for the Poland fixture, only 19 members of the team made the trip to Portugal.
Pisa forward Rafiu Durosinmi was granted permission to remain behind and attend to personal matters. The striker has recently been linked with a potential transfer away from the Serie A club following their relegation.
In a separate development, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has extended a late invitation to Racing Genk defender Christian Akpan. The 21-year-old left-back earned the call-up shortly after making his senior debut for the Belgian side.
Akpan is regarded as a versatile option, capable of playing on both sides of the defence and also operating in a defensive midfield role when needed. The former ASEC Mimosas player has already arrived in Lisbon and is expected to participate in tomorrow’s training session.
Meanwhile, Iwobi’s teammate Samuel Chukwueze is anticipated to join the rest of the squad on Friday as preparations continue for the upcoming fixtures.
