Super Eagles star, Alex Iwobi ended his Premier League goal drought as the Toffees lost 2-1 against Wolves at the Molineux on Monday night.
The Nigerian last scored in the exact fixture last season (Jan. 12, 2021) when Everton sealed a 2-1 win against Wolves who were led by Nuno Espirito Santo.
Rafa Benitez’ side headed into the game hoping to bounce back from the shocking home defeat to Claudio Ranieri’s Watford in gameweek nine.
But the Merseysiders were undone in the first half by the brilliance of Bruno Lage’s men.
Wolves began asking questions of their visitor’s defence as early as the 10th minute with Conor Coady watching his effort from close range blocked by Mason Holgate.
Four minutes later, Jordan Pickford was forced to a diving save from a Trincao attempt to deny the hosts.
The Three Lions number one was beaten one minute later when Hwang found the back of the net after the hosts opened up Everton’s defence but the VAR spared their blushes after spotting an offside in the buildup.
Lage’s men refused to relent and they kept pushing until they found the breakthrough in the 28th minute through Max Kilman who was teed up by R. Aït-Nouri.
Everton’s night went from bad to worse four minutes later when Raúl Jiménez pounced on a huge mistake at the back by Godfrey, before chipping the ball over Pickford to make in 2-0.
Everton returned a bit more composed and determined in the second half with Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray drilling the defence of their hosts.
A brilliant save by Wolves’ keeper kept the hosts at bay until the 66th minute when Iwobi halved the deficit after an assist from Michael Kean.
The Nigerian, according to OptaJoe, has now netted three times against Wolves, more than against any other opponent in the EPL.
Everton failed to secure a comeback as Wolves won the game 2-1 to remain unbeaten in their last five EPL games.
Benitez’s men have lost three EPL games in a row for the first time since October/November 2020 under Carlo Ancelotti.
The victory leaves Wolves seventh on the log with 16 points, two ahead of the Toffees who are 10th with 14 points.
