IT’S A POLITICAL STATEMENT! Why I wear Made In Nigeria designers to public events – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has said she wears made in Nigeria designers to major outings to make a political statement.
The multiple award-winning writer revealed the reason behind her choice of fashion in an interview with i-D’s Candice Carty-Williams.
She said it is also a way to support an industry that is full of talents.
She said,
“I decided to use fashion as a kind of political statement which is to say that I made the choice to wear mostly Nigerian designers to public events, because obviously, I want to support an industry that’s full of talent, but also to make a case for how fashion can tell a story. Fashion and culture are intertwined in very interesting ways.”
Among Adichie’s works are Purple Hibiscus (2003), Half of a Yellow Sun (2006), Americanah (2013), The Thing Around Your Neck (2009), We Should All Be Feminists (2014) and her most recent book, Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions.
