Published

Legendary Italian and Juventus defensive stalwart Giorgio Chiellini has officially retired from professional football at the age of 39.

The announcement came at the conclusion of the MLS season, with Chiellini playing his final match for Los Angeles FC in their cup final defeat to Columbus Crew last Saturday.

Chiellini shared the news on social media alongside a clever sticker-book inspired video, expressing gratitude for the beautiful and intense journey of his football career.

He stated, “You have been my everything. With you, I have traveled a unique and unforgettable path. But now it is time to start new chapters, face new challenges, and write further important and exciting pages of life.”

Starting his career with Livorno before moving to Fiorentina, Chiellini made a lasting impact at Juventus, where he became a defensive icon.

Juventus paid tribute to him on their website, acknowledging his superhero-like presence on the field and his instrumental role in their numerous successes.

Throughout his illustrious career, Chiellini played a crucial part in Juventus winning nine consecutive Serie A titles between 2011 and 2020, a period that marked a triumphant return to Serie A following the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal.

His trophy cabinet also includes five Italian Cups, one MLS Cup, and the European Championships with Italy in 2021.

Chiellini earned 117 caps for the Italian national team, placing him joint-fifth alongside Daniel De Rossi in the list of all-time Azzurri appearances. His retirement marks the end of a remarkable 23-season journey in professional football.
