IT BELONGS TO UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI! Fish Hawk flies 5808 kilometres in 109 days, lands in Jigawa

The migratory prowess of the Western Osprey (Pandion Haliaetus) – also called sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk – was shown after one of the birds was caught in Jigawa State last week. It had flown from Finland to Nigeria.

According to a zoologist and biodiversity expert, Abubakar S. Ringim, who shared the details on Facebook, a tracker found on the bird showed it is owned by the University of Helsinki, Finland.

He added that the bird flew 5808km over 109 days before being caught on 25 October 2018 at Malam Madori, Jigawa.

Ringim said the bird was celebrated by the locals and later released back into the wild at the Baturiya Wetland Reserve in Jigawa.

Sharing the images on the Nigerian Bird Atlas Project Facebook Group, Ringim wrote,

Osprey Pandion halietus caught on 25/10/2018 at Malam Madori, Jigawa State. The bird came from University of Helsinki, Finland. Available records from the University revealed that the bird was ringed 106 days prior to its caught in Jigawa, and covered 5808 kilometers during it’s migration to winter in Africa, in particular, Nigeria. The bird were celebrated and successfully released today at the Baturiya Wetland Reserve in Jigawa.
