The Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists attacked Kareto, a town in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State, on Saturday morning.

Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the attack through a statement posted on his X handle.

According to Zagazola the militants stormed the town and destroyed vital equipment, causing panic among residents.

He wrote “Kareto is one of many areas affected by ISWAP’s activities, which have included violent attacks and recruitment campaigns. In June, the group held da‘wāt (religious outreach) events in villages near Lake Chad, encouraging locals to join their cause.”

During these events, ISWAP distributed food items like rice, beans, and maize, as well as cash gifts, in a bid to win support from residents.

They promised better governance, improved security, and essential services under their vision of an Islamic caliphate.
