The UN General Assembly passed a resolution on Friday, calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has killed thousands of civilians on both sides.
A total of 120 countries, including Nigeria, supported the resolution, but opposed by 14 countries, such as the US and Israel, while 45 countries abstained from the vote.
The resolution urged all parties to respect international humanitarian and human rights laws, and to protect civilians and civilian objects from harm.
It also demanded that humanitarian workers and facilities be protected and allowed to deliver essential supplies and services to the civilians in need in the Gaza Strip.
The conflict started on 7 October when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, killing over 1,400 Israelis. Israel responded by declaring war on Hamas and bombing the Gaza Strip, where Hamas is based.
The air strikes have killed over 7,000 Gaza residents, including about 3,000 children, according to official figures.
The resolution was on the “protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations”, UN News reported.
