Israeli airstrikes and artillery fire on the city of Nabatieh and nearby areas in southern Lebanon killed at least 16 people and injured several others early Friday, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency.

The attacks came despite the implementation of a US-Iran agreement that includes provisions for ending Israeli strikes on Lebanon.

The NNA reported that Israeli forces launched attacks after midnight on residential areas in the towns of Al-Sharqiyah, Harouf and Kfar Sir in Nabatieh district, resulting in casualties and leaving some residents unaccounted for.

At about 2:10 am (2100 GMT), Israeli fighter jets carried out multiple strikes on Nabatieh city, Kfar Tebnit, Nabatieh al-Fawqa and the Rayhan heights, the agency said.

Later, around 3 am (2200 GMT), further airstrikes struck the Kfarjoz-Nabatieh area, the university district in Nabatieh and the Al-Baydar neighborhood in Harouf. The attacks killed eight people, according to NNA.

The agency said another Israeli strike hit the Al-Ashamiya area located between Al-Sharqiyah and Doueir, destroying a home and killing four people.

In Kfar Sir, three people were killed in an Israeli attack, the report added.

Around 5 am (0200 GMT), an Israeli drone targeted a motorcycle near the Doueir municipality building, killing one person and injuring another, according to NNA.

The strikes followed the signing on Wednesday evening of the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The agreement was designed to end the war launched by the US and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28 and to stop Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

Under the memorandum, Washington and Tehran are expected to engage in 60 days of negotiations, with a possible extension, aimed at reaching a broader agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and international sanctions.

Israel has carried out a major military offensive in Lebanon since March 2, with official figures reporting 3,912 deaths, 11,873 injuries and the displacement of more than 1 million people.

Israel continues to maintain control over areas in southern Lebanon, including territories occupied for decades and others seized during the latest conflict. During the recent military campaign, Israeli forces advanced more than 10 kilometers (6 miles) into Lebanese territory.
