Nigerian-born mixed martial artist Israel Adesanya arrived in Lagos on Thursday with his parents, receiving a warm welcome despite his recent loss to South African fighter Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 305.
Adesanya, who is also known as the “Stylebender,” lost his UFC middleweight title to Du Plessis after being forced to submit in the fourth round of their fight.
Before the match, Du Plessis had taunted Adesanya’s African heritage during their press conference, adding tension to the bout.
In a video shared on his Instagram and recirculated on X (formerly Twitter), Adesanya was seen arriving at Lagos airport, where he was met by excited fans. Despite his defeat, the atmosphere was festive, with supporters celebrating his return to Nigeria.
A group of local drummers performed Yoruba music to welcome the fighter, who proudly refers to himself as “Omo Oba,” meaning “the king’s son” or “prince.” The music and dancing created a joyful scene as Adesanya and his family stepped off the plane.
Adesanya shared his feelings about the reception, saying, “It’s good to be home. The love from my people is always strong, no matter what.”
Despite the loss, Adesanya’s fans in Nigeria continue to support him, appreciating his achievements and representing the country on the global stage.
