Popular American streamer IShowSpeed (Darren Jason Watkins Jr.) has reignited the West African “Jollof Wars” after declaring Nigerian jollof rice superior to the Liberian version.
During his recent Africa tour, Speed sampled Liberian jollof and rated it “eight out of ten,” but said it did not surpass Nigeria’s.
“This jollof rice, I’ll give it an eight out of ten. But I have to be honest, it’s good, but I think Nigerian is better. I gotta be honest,” he stated, prompting mixed reactions from the crowd.
The comment has fueled online debate, with many Nigerian fans celebrating the verdict while others continue the long-running rivalry over which West African nation makes the best jollof.
Speed has previously weighed in on the regional competition, also favoring Nigerian jollof over Senegalese and Ghanaian versions, highlighting differences in rice type, spices, oils, and smokiness that define each country’s recipe.
