Heartbreaks spiralled into anger on Tuesday evening at the MKO Abuja Stadium as irate fans destroyed properties after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
After a goalless draw in Ghana on Friday, Thomas Partey and William Troost-Ekong ensured the second leg in Abuja ended 1-1, leaving the Ghanaians to qualify on away goals.
Striker Victor Osimhen thought he had given the Eagles the lead in the 36th minute but his celebration was cut short as the VAR ruled the goal offside.
Tempers flared after the final whistle as hundreds of angry fans stormed the pitch and destroyed the technical area.
The celebrating Black Stars players were not speared as well, the angry fans pelted the Ghanaians with water bottles until they found a way out of the newly renovated pitch, according to The PUNCH.
With the Ghanaians out of sight, the mob descended on the grass, pulling it, before destroying the technical area and breaking the glass.
Attempts by security operatives proved futile as the teargas canisters fired to disperse the mob had no effect on the fans who continued to wreak havoc, pelting the VIP stand from pitchside with different objects.
