Iran’s military has warned that it will retaliate against American bases and interests in the Middle East. This will happen if the United States launches another round of attacks on the country.
According to Al Jazeera, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said it had received information suggesting Washington was preparing to resume strikes.
Tehran warned that countries allowing their territories or facilities to be used to support an American attack could also be considered participants. Therefore, these countries would be involved in any military action.
The warning comes as US President Donald Trump considers his next move over the conflict with Iran.
Trump weighs fresh action against Iran
Trump said on Sunday that he was in a “deciding mode”. He listed further military action, economic pressure or an agreement among the options available to Washington.
He also indicated that he would be willing to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The meeting would be during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has travelled to New York for the gathering, with a stop in Qatar.
Qatar has been involved in mediation efforts aimed at restarting negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
Iran sets conditions for talks
Iran has reportedly told Qatari and Pakistani mediators that any renewed negotiations would require an end to attacks. Furthermore, negotiations would require the release of frozen Iranian assets and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has also said Tehran should strengthen its military position before returning to negotiations.
The escalating tensions continue to affect traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes.
Shipping data cited by Al Jazeera showed that 12 commodity vessels crossed the waterway over the weekend. This is compared with 35 the previous weekend.
Iran’s military warned that any renewed US attack would result in what it described as a response without restrictions.
