An Iranian court has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to six years in prison, her lawyer told AFP on Sunday.

“She has been sentenced to six years in prison for gathering and collusion to commit crimes,” lawyer Mostafa Nili said, adding that she also received a two-year travel ban.

Mohammadi was separately sentenced to one-and-a-half years for propaganda activities and ordered to be exiled for two years to Khosf city in South Khorasan province. Under Iranian law, the sentences run concurrently.

Nili said the verdict is not final and can be appealed. He expressed hope that, due to her health issues, she might be released on bail for treatment.

Mohammadi, 53, has spent much of the past decade in prison for her activism against Iran’s use of the death penalty and the mandatory hijab law. She has not seen her twin children, who live in Paris, since 2015.

In December 2024, she was briefly released for three weeks on medical grounds after surgery. Even in prison, she has continued protesting, including staging hunger strikes.

She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, primarily for her campaign against capital punishment in Iran. Her children accepted the award on her behalf as she remained incarcerated.

Human rights groups say Iran carries out more executions each year than any country except China.
