Iran has denied a report it planned to assassinate the US ambassador to South Africa, Lana Marks.
Citing unnamed US government officials, the Politico reported that United States authorities had been aware of the plot since the start of the American spring but intelligence reports had become more specific in recent weeks.
Politico also claimed the Iranian embassy in Pretoria is involved in the plot.
The report added that US Intelligence is not sure why 66-year-old South Africa-born Marks, who was sworn in as the US ambassador last October and does not appear to have any known links to the country, would be a target.
However, several online reports have claimed Iran sees Marks as a low hanging fruit in their bid to hit back at the Americans over the January killing of General Qassem Soleimani, the leader of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force.
Soleimani was killed on January 3rd in a US drone strike in Baghdad, Iraq. President Donald Trump described the General’s killing as a pre-emptive strike as he was masterminding attacks by Iran-aligned militias on US forces in Iraq.
But, the Iranian embassy in Pretoria, South Africa has labelled the claims as baseless.
Independent Media, which quoted the spokesperson of the embassy, Hamid Reza, as saying in a message,
“While I deny this baseless accusation, we will provide you with more information soon.”
