Unitwd States President, Donald Trump, on Thursday suggested that Iran’s current leadership structure should be completely dismantled, stating that he already has some individuals in mind who could serve as a “good leader,” APA reports.
Speaking during a phone interview with NBC News, Trump said his goal was to eliminate the existing system rather than allow it to rebuild over time.
“We want to go in and clean out everything,” Trump told NBC News in a phone call. “We don’t want someone who would rebuild over a 10-year period.
“We want them to have a good leader. We have some people who I think would do a good job,” he added, declining to name anyone.
The president also said measures were being taken to ensure that those he considers potential leaders survive the ongoing conflict.
“We are watching them, yeah,” he said.
Trump’s latest remarks build on comments he made during an interview with NBC News on Saturday when he was asked about who might lead Iran in the future.
At the time, he suggested the decision could ultimately involve him.
“I don’t know, but at some point they’ll be calling me to ask who I’d like,” Trump said, adding that he was “only being a little sarcastic when I say that.”
The U.S. president also reacted Thursday to remarks by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who told NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Llamas that Iran is prepared for a possible ground invasion by American and Israeli forces.
Trump dismissed the statement, describing it as unnecessary and indicating that such a military move is not currently under consideration.
“It’s a waste of time. They’ve lost everything. They’ve lost their navy. They’ve lost everything they can lose,” he said, adding that the pace and intensity of strikes will continue.
