A fire incident at Pegatron’s Chennai plant in India has led to a temporary halt in iPhone assembly.

The Taiwanese electronics company decided to cancel all shifts on Monday following the incident which happened on Sunday night.

While the factory has the capacity to produce approximately 26,000 iPhones daily, it has been assembling about 8,000-12,000 iPhones daily in recent months, according to industry sources.

Apple, the recipient of these assembled iPhones, has not yet responded to requests for comment on the situation.

Pegatron, a key supplier for Apple, contributes to about 10% of Apple’s iPhone production in India.

Apple has been investing significantly in India’s local manufacturing efforts since it began iPhone assembly in the country in 2017 through Wistron and later Foxconn, aligning with the Indian government’s policies promoting domestic manufacturing.

This incident adds to the list of challenges faced by Apple’s suppliers in India, including food poisoning at a Foxconn facility in 2021, worker unrest at a Wistron plant in 2020, and a fire at a Foxlink facility in February 2023.
