Interpol investigates unsolved murders of 46 women in Europe

Global police body, Interpol, has launched a new campaign to identify 46 women whose remains have been found across Europe.

These are unsolved cases, with some dating back decades, involving women who were either murdered or died under suspicious or unclear circumstances.

Interpol, based in Lyon, France, started this initiative on Tuesday as part of its “Identify Me” campaign. This campaign follows a similar one launched in 2023, which aimed to identify 22 deceased women. That earlier appeal received about 1,800 tips from the public.

The campaign has now expanded to include unsolved cases from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, as well as new cases from France, Italy, and Spain.

Interpol’s Secretary General, Jurgen Stock, said, “Even the smallest piece of information can be vital in helping solve these cold cases. Whether it is a memory, a tip, or a shared story, the smallest detail could help uncover the truth.”

One success story from the 2023 appeal came in November, when the body of a woman found 31 years ago in a Belgian river was identified as Briton Rita Roberts. Her identity was confirmed after a family member recognized her tattoo of a black flower with green leaves.

As part of the current campaign, Interpol is publishing images of the women’s faces, along with items like jewellery and clothing found at the sites where their remains were discovered.
