International Women’s Day: Joke Silva, Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, others extol the virtues of women

Published

Women all over the world are celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) which is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights.

Female celebrities, human rights activist and notable personalities in Nigeria are celebrating IWD by sharing inspirational posts to extol the virtues of women.

Personalities like Mo Abudu, Funke Akindele Bello, Joke Silva, Faithia Williams, Kemi Adetiba, Tonto Dikeh, Niniola, amongst others penned beautiful messages in honour of women all over the world.

Many paid glowing tributes to the girl child while reminding them that they are strong and can achieve whatever they set their heart to become.

The IWD is celebrated on March 8 every year and gives women the platform of voicing out against persistent ills against the female sex.

The IWD is a public holiday in some countries but largely ignored elsewhere. In some places, it is a day of protest; in others, it is a day that celebrates womanhood.

After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women’s Day on February 28, 1909, in New York, the 1910 International Socialist Woman’s Conference suggested a Women’s Day be held annually.

After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

Today is a special day, cos we get to celebrate both FRIDAY and Women’s International Day. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay ? ?‍♀️ ?‍♂️ ? And in honor of that, here is a #FlashBackFriday video of @modupeodedeyi. Modupe is very special to us. Even before @kingofboysmovie was released (and is what it is now) she took a bet, promising her co-workers they would love it. And if they didn’t, she would refund them all their ticket money…. And there were a lot of them. Do you think she won that bet??? ? This is true definition of “Women supporting women”… Even when they don’t know them personally. We’ll forever be grateful to you, Modupe. Happy International Women’s Day, Everyone. Celebrate a woman today!!! #BalanceForBetter #BeingAWomanRocks

My name is King Tonto founder of The Tonto Dikeh Foundation!! HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY TO ALL WOMEN ALL OVER THE WORLD!! Today is a day to voice out on creating a #BalanceforBetter A balance world is a better world, today we celebrate women all over the world including myself, for it is a day set aside to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness against biasness, and take action for equality. For the future is exciting, let’s build a gender-balanced world, everyone has a part to play at all time and everywhere. From grassroots activism to worldwide action, we are entering an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. We noticed its absence and experience and celebrate its presence. As the theme says “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change” it’s a wakeup call to focus on innovative ways in which we can advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure. Today is a marked day for us, we should seize this opportunity to echo the consideration on how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda building momentum for the effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially goal number 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls and number 4: Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning. Today I as a woman, am celebrating 10 women from all works of life, from a fish seller, Charcoal Seller, Vegetable Seller, Fufu seller and other petty business women I am empowering them into knowing that they are equal to every existing human being. So I encourage us all to rise up and work together into making Nigeria and the world at large a better place for all. WE CAN!!! All been said, let us create a balance in the society. For balance drives a better working world. Let’s all help create a #BalanceforBetter. @t_d_foundation
