The Niger State government has donated 25 operational vehicles to the Nigeria Police Force to improve security patrols, especially in major towns across the state.

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago made this known on Wednesday during the passing-out ceremony of 50 officers from the newly formed Special Protection Unit Base 23, Minna. The event was held at the Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi complex in Minna, the state capital.

According to a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the vehicles will help strengthen the patrol efforts of the Niger State Police Command.

“The Niger State government has procured 25 additional vehicles to donate to the Nigeria Police Force, Niger State command, to boost patrols, especially in major towns of the State,” the statement quoted Governor Bago as saying.

He also announced that plans are underway to build police barracks on the outskirts of Minna. This, he said, would support wider security coverage across the capital.

“My administration will continue to support the Nigeria Police and other security agencies as we work ambitiously to address the menace of insecurity in the state,” the governor added.

The ceremony also marked the graduation of the first batch of 50 officers from the Special Protection Unit. The SPU was created by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to provide elite protection services for high-profile individuals, including top government officials.

Commander of the Minna base, CSP Hassan Sani, said the officers were trained in areas such as VIP protection, convoy operations, firearm use, martial arts, self-defence, first aid, and firefighting.

“The Special Protection Unit is designed to meet the increasing demand for elite protection services,” CSP Sani explained.

The new unit, along with the donated vehicles, is expected to improve the police’s ability to protect important personalities and boost general security in Niger State.
