Infant, woman die as speeding bus summersaults in Ebonyi

Two people, including a nine-month-old baby girl and a woman, have died in a road accident that happened on Sunday in the Uburu area of Ohaozara Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.

The crash occurred at Uduma Junction when a bus carrying about 25 passengers, including children, lost control while speeding around a sharp bend. According to Channels news, the bus hit another vehicle and somersaulted three times.

Local residents quickly rushed the injured to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, Uburu.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the Public Relations Officer of DUFUTH, Agwụ Nwogo, said the victims were returning to Imo State after attending a burial in Okporike, Abakaliki.

“The hospital activated emergency response protocols to provide care to the victims. Two persons, including a nine-month-old baby and a female adult, were confirmed dead on arrival,” Nwogo said.

He added that 23 others were injured with conditions ranging from broken bones, deep cuts, and serious head injuries.

“As of today, 18 patients, including the driver, are receiving treatment in the Accident and Emergency department, Surgery Ward, and Intensive Care Unit,” he explained.

“Four people with minor injuries have been treated and discharged,” he added.

An 11-month-old baby who suffered a serious brain injury is still in critical condition and is on life support in the intensive care unit.

The hospital expressed deep sadness over the tragedy and promised to continue providing the best care possible for the victims.
