The Independent National Electoral Commission has begun reviewing a recent Supreme Court judgment concerning political party membership registers. This also relates to the nomination of candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Daily Report, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan said the commission received the Certified True Copy of the judgment on Tuesday morning.
“We only received the certified true copy of this judgement this morning, and it is being reviewed,” Amupitan said.
Court restores Electoral Act provisions
The Supreme Court had upheld provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 dealing with party membership registers and eligibility to participate in party primaries.
The ruling restored Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2), which had earlier been struck down by the Court of Appeal.
The judgment has raised questions about politicians who switched parties after nomination processes had begun or been concluded.
Candidates face uncertainty
Among politicians whose nominations have attracted attention are Rivers APC governorship candidate Kingsley Chinda. Furthermore, Delta Central NDC senatorial candidate Ovie Omo-Agege and PRP presidential candidate Donald Duke have also attracted attention.
However, INEC has not announced the disqualification of any candidate.
The commission said it would first study the judgment before determining what action, if any, should follow.
