The Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced a nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise, creating an opportunity for citizens who have recently turned 18 to register and participate in upcoming elections, including the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State.

This development was disclosed by the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, during an interaction with journalists on Wednesday in Awka. Mefor welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and essential for ensuring the inclusive participation of young adults in the democratic process.

He said the move reflected INEC’s commitment to strengthening democracy and preparing for credible future elections in Nigeria.

Mefor called on all eligible citizens who have not yet registered to take full advantage of the CVR exercise, which officially began on Tuesday, July 8, and will end on Wednesday, July 17.

He said, “The exercise provides an opportunity for young people, who have recently turned 18 years and are now eligible to vote, to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).”

The commissioner clarified that in addition to new voters, the exercise also covers citizens who have relocated to Anambra and wish to transfer their voting rights, as well as those who have lost or damaged their voter cards and need replacements.

He urged those who fall within these categories to visit the nearest registration centres and complete the process, emphasizing its importance for a vibrant and inclusive democracy.

“This exercise is a crucial step in ensuring that the nation’s democracy remains vibrant and representative of the will of the people,” he stated.

Mefor also advised citizens against double registration, encouraging the public to support INEC in its mission to conduct free, fair, credible, and transparent elections.
