INEC: Election offences and penalties

Applicable provision of the electoral act 2010[as amended]

1. Offence
   Unlawful possession or selling or buying of voter’s card

Penalty

Fine of N500,000.00 or imprisonment of two years.

2. Offence

Impersonation

Penalty

Shall be arrested and prosecuted for an offence of impersonation under the law applicable in the state.

3. Offence

Bribery of INEC officials or security officer to rig election

Penalty

Fine of N500,000.00 or imprisonment for 12 month or both.

4. Offence

Spying to know who voter voted for

Penalty

Fine N100,000.00 or imprisonment for 6 months.

5. Offence
   Vote or trying to vote where not registered

Penalty

Fine of N100,000.00 or imprisonment for 6 months.

6. Offence

Acting or inciting other to act in a disorderly manner

Penalty

Fine of N500,000.00 or imprisonment for 12 month.

7. Offence

Campaigning and blaring siren within 300m of the polling unit on election day

Penalty

Fine of N100,000.00 or imprisonment for 12 months.

8. Offence
   Destroying or snatching any election material.

Penalty

Shall be imprisoned for a period of 12 months.

9. Offence
   Underage or multiple voting

Penalty

Fine of N500,000.00 or 12 months imprisonment or both.
