Residents of Ohaji in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State have called for urgent intervention from both state and federal governments to address the deteriorating condition of the Owerri-Port Harcourt road.
According to the PUNCH, President-General of the Umuapu Town Union, at Umuapu, Apostle Clifford Ogbuehi, expressed frustration over the government’s neglect of the road. Ogbuehi noted that the road’s condition significantly deteriorated during an attempt to expand it to a double lane under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The project was eventually abandoned by the contractor, leaving the road in disrepair.
The road, particularly at the Umuagwu and Umuapu axis, has become notorious for causing vehicular damage and frequent accidents.
This Trunk A road is a critical link between Imo State and neighboring Rivers and Bayelsa states. However, its worsening condition has raised serious concerns among local residents.
“The Umuapu community, which lies between Imo and Rivers states, is particularly affected,” Ogbuehi said. “While the portion of the road in Rivers State is well-maintained, the Imo State side is a death trap for users.”
He further highlighted the severe impact the dilapidated road has had on the local community, including disruptions to daily life and economic activities.Accessing the farm market has become a nightmare.
“Our sleep is constantly disturbed by motorists seeking alternative routes. Businesses are struggling, with young entrepreneurs leaving in search of better opportunities. The road’s poor condition has also become a hotspot for criminal activities,” Ogbuehi added.
The community leader urged the Imo State and Federal governments to take immediate action before the road becomes completely impassable and further endangers the lives of those who rely on it.
