Gunshots were reportedly fired at the Amaimo Registration Centre in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State on Saturday during the off-season elections.

The incident unfolded a few meters away from the Central Amaimo school, the designated polling unit for Samuel Anyanwu, the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party.

Security officials reportedly fired the gunshots into the air to diffuse a heated argument, causing distress among voters present at the Amaimo Registration Centre.

Eyewitnesses reported that the gunshots rang out around 9:48 a.m., while voters were already in the process of checking their names on the displayed Independent National Electoral Commission register.

The major candidates in the election include Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress, Athan Achonu of the Labour Party, and Tony Ejiogu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
