VIDEO: I’m imperfect, not corrupt – Wike

Ministerial list: Tinubu won’t regret nominating me, Wike vows

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has described himself as an imperfect person.

The governor, who described himself thus while answering questions on being corrupt in an interview with BBC Pidgin News on Sunday, also seized the opportunity to restate his allegation that the regime of the president, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), was protecting the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, from prosecution over alleged misappropriation of state funds.

Dismissing suggestions he might be a corrupt politician, Wike said: “I will not say I’m corrupt, but I will say I’m not a perfect person. If you ask whether I like money, YES. If I don’t like money how will I pay my children’s school fees; if I don’t like money how will I pay my sick mother’s medicals? So people that say they don’t like money are losing.”

Wike had on March 11, 2021 accused the Federal government of protecting Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor, from facing the wrath of the law for allegedly misappropriating proceeds from the sales of some state assets. Specifically, Wike said Amaechi failed to account for $308m made from the sale of the state-owned power plant and other critical assets when he was Governor of Rivers State.

On Sunday, the governor said Amaechi only accounted for $208,000 from the $308m.

He said: “People gave you opportunity. You sold our properties, everything. And people are talking in this state because of the government that says they are fighting corruption and protecting people. You (Amaechi) sold our property for $308m and kept for us $208,000.

“That is the kind of people parading themselves in government, for a government that says they are fighting corruption, shame,” he rued.
