Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed deep gratitude to the University of Port Harcourt for offering him an honorary doctorate degree.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Professor Owunari Georgewill, made the announcement during a visit to Wike’s residence in Abuja on Wednesday. He presented the official letter confirming that the former Rivers State governor would be awarded a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa).

Reacting in a Facebook post on Thursday, Wike described the award as a great honour and said he was proud to be recognised by a school he once attended.

“I feel so honoured to have been offered Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc Honoris Causa) by University of Port Harcourt, the university that gave me everything,” Wike wrote.

The minister shared that he began his academic journey at UNIPORT, where he first studied political science before later going on to study law.

“I thank the University Governing Council led by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, for finding me worthy of this honour,” he said.

Wike added that he accepted the award on behalf of his family, wife, and friends, and promised to attend the university’s golden jubilee celebration. He also pledged to continue supporting the institution in every way he can.

“I will also continue to partner and support the university,” he added.

Aside from his degree from UNIPORT, Wike earned a Bachelor of Laws from Rivers State University in 1997 and later completed a Master’s degree in Political and Administrative Studies.

Earlier in March this year, the University of Calabar also honoured him with a doctorate degree in Law.
