Mystery shrouds the killing of a police inspector, Inah Ubi, who was reportedly shot dead by an army sergeant in Lagos State on Wednesday.
The NATION reports that the suspect, John Ocheme, is currently being held in a military custody as an investigation into the shooting gets underway.
Prior to his death, Ubi was attached to the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), CMS Jetty, Lagos Island.
According to the deceased’s relative, Ubi whose remains have been deposited at the General Hospital on Lagos Island, was killed near the premises of a dredging firm, Batare Nigeria Limited in the Sangotedo area of the state.
A source said that Ocheme and another unnamed soldier mounted guard at the firm, while Ubi and another colleague (a policeman) were also on official duty, providing security for three NIWA officials on tax or revenue drive.
The source said, “We left here on a flying boat at about 9am. We got to the Sangotedo area of Okun Ajah and got off the boat. There were many dredging companies there.”
On getting to shore, the NIWA team allegedly chased after some persons suspected to be carrying out illegal dredging operations.
The report added that the suspects fled leaving behind some of their equipment before Ubi apprehended one of them.
However, one of the fleeing suspects ran to the soldiers.
Accosting the soldiers, the NIWA team introduced themselves and requested for the handover of the suspect.
While they were still at it, several gunshots were heard from the direction of Ubi.
On a closer look, the team found him in a pool of his blood on the ground near the second soldier.
As at the time of filing this report, the spokesman of 81 Division of the Nigerian Army covering Lagos and Ogun, Major Olaniyi Osoba, declined comment on the incident.
He, however, assured that the army would not bury such matter.
Meanwhile, further reports revealed that the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police has commenced investigation and met with the head of NIWA’s CMS Jetty last Friday, in the company of the Army’s lawyer.
