Chairman of the Adamawa Muslim Council, Gambo Jika, On Thursday, has identified lack of efficient social welfare services as the major factor responsible for the existence of illegal and local rehabilitation centres in the North.
Jika attributed the rise of illegal detention centres in the region to the collapse of government social welfare service centres.
He noted that the absent and poor condition of services of remand homes and psychiatric hospitals was also responsible for the establishment of traditional corrective and mad people rehabilitation homes in many states in the region.
He said the council was disturbed by the increasing cases of child drug abuses as well as human trafficking in Adamawa.
“The collapse of Social Welfare Departments and the absence of remand homes, psychiatrist hospitals and sanitariums lead to the rise of traditional reformatory centres run by individuals in the North and the state in particular.
“The council is calling on the Adamawa Government to look into such deficiencies and take appropriate action to revamp Social Welfare Services in the state.
“Also, the rising cases of child abuse and rape within the state is of serious concern to the council, we want the government to urgently reform the existing laws in order to punish and curtail the menace,” he said.
Jika said the council commended the state government for establishing and training of vigilante units to work hand in hand with the security joint task force to improve security in the state.
He urged all Muslims in the state to support the new security architecture of the government and intensify prayers for peace, stability and development of the state.
