Ikoyi building collapse: Mistakes were made, Sanwo-Olu admits

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has admitted that ‘mistakes were made’ prior to the collapse of the high-rise building in the Ikoyi area of the state.

Sanwo-Olu made the disclosure during his second visit to the scene of the incident on Wednesday.

Although he did not specify if the mistakes were on the part of the construction company in charge of the building o government officials/agency in charge of monitoring construction safety, he noted that anyone found guilty would face the full wrath of the law.

“Indeed mistakes were made from all angles and this is an event that truly really should not be happening in modern day city like Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He also confirmed the indefinite suspension of the Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

“That, I gave instructions to. We would say that we had to take from the head, from the leadership of that agency.

Be rest assured that if there are other people that are found in the course of the investigation, everybody will face the full wrath of the law.”

Speaking further, he described the incident as a national tragedy as he sympathised with those affect.

The governor expressed his “deepest condolences to families and loved ones of people that might have been involved in this very unfortunate, tragic, monumental national loss.”

He thanked and commended “the gallant first responders and other parties, public and private, involved in the search and rescue mission.”
