The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate rescue of 20 medical students who were kidnapped in Otukpo, Benue State.

The students were on their way to the annual convention of the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students in Enugu when they were abducted.

In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the IGP’s strong condemnation of the kidnapping, describing it as “truly appalling, callous, and unacceptable.”

The IGP expressed his commitment to ensuring the safe return of the students. He said, “In a display of unwavering commitment to the rescue, safety, and well-being of the young Nigerians, the IGP has ordered the prompt deployment of a substantial number of human and technical resources to augment the manpower of the Benue State Command and ensure swift rescue of our beloved students.”

He further explained that this initiative includes mobilizing additional tactical units, deploying advanced helicopters and drones, and using specialized vehicles to aid in the search and rescue operation.

“The Nigeria Police Force stands with the victims and their loved ones during this challenging time, and we are committed to ensuring the safe return of the students,” Egbetokun added.

The IGP also reiterated the police force’s determination to fight against crimes, particularly kidnapping. He emphasized, “The Inspector-General of Police reiterates the zeal of the force to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of the perpetrators and others alike.”

In his appeal to the public, the IGP urged anyone with useful information to contact the nearest police station or the relevant helplines. “Individuals with relevant details are encouraged to contact the nearest police station, the state’s command control number, or the FHQ via [email protected] and other helplines,” he said.
