The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a thorough investigation into the tragic boat accident in Kogi State, which claimed at least 54 lives.
The incident involved about 200 traders traveling to a market in Niger State. Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi in a statement on Saturday announced that, “The IGP has directed the Force Marine Officer to lead a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the mishap. The aim is to identify contributing factors and develop strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.”
Egbetokun assured families of the victims that the police are committed to intensifying rescue operations and ensuring better safety for water transport in the country. “Resources and operational modalities have been activated to intensify search and rescue efforts,” Adejobi added.
The IGP also urged waterway operators, boat owners, and stakeholders to collaborate with the Force Marine Department to adopt and enforce safety measures to protect passengers and operators.
Meanwhile, Abdullahi Saku, chairman of Katcha Local Government Area, confirmed that 20 passengers had been rescued so far. He noted that the boat was carrying over 200 people, mostly traders and artisans, when the accident occurred.
Saku called on the Federal Government to dredge the Dembo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger up to Baro to minimize future boat mishaps.
This accident adds to the growing list of recent boat mishaps across Nigeria, which have been attributed to poor regulation, overloading, and lack of safety measures.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities and local communities working to recover missing passengers. The IGP expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged to improve waterway safety nationwide.
