A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mapo, Ibadan, has sentenced a school teacher, Adebayo Osayemi, to two years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing his employer’s phone and cash amounting to N237,000.
The judgment was delivered by Magistrate O.O. Latunji, who convicted Osayemi after considering the evidence presented by the police and his guilty plea. “Osayemi is hereby sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour, without any option of fine,” the Magistrate declared.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Oluseye Akinola, told the court that Osayemi committed the crime on January 13 at No. 3, Church Street, Behind Fagbemi Filling Station, Orita-Challenge, Ibadan.
According to Akinola, Osayemi, who was a teacher at Montesseri Gofas Nursery and Primary School, carefully observed the movements of the proprietress, Funmilayo Adesinmi, before entering her office to steal.
Adesinmi had briefly left her office to purchase food items from a nearby market, leaving three children in the school. During this time, Osayemi took advantage of her absence.
Adesinmi’s daughter reportedly saw him entering the office, and upon her return, she discovered that €20 (about N35,000) and her Tecno Smart 4 phone, valued at N95,000, were missing.
Further investigations revealed that Osayemi had transferred N82,000 and N25,000 from Adesinmi’s Money Point and First Bank accounts to his Opay and UBA accounts, respectively.
The prosecution stated that Osayemi’s actions violated Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II Law of Oyo State 2000.
