Ibadan explosion victims to get temporary accommodation – Makinde

In the aftermath of the explosion that rocked parts of Ibadan, Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has taken swift actions to address the immediate needs of the victims and ensure their well-being by providing treatment and free temporary accommodations.

The governor who visited the explosion site at Bodija, Ibadan, stated, “We visited the scene of the explosion which occurred at about 7.44 pm yesterday, 16 January 2024, in Bodija, Ibadan. This unfortunate incident resulted in death and injury to residents in the vicinity and also affected properties.”

The confirmed that two people died, and 77 were injured, receiving treatment in public and private hospitals around.

Expressing concern for the affected individuals, the governor revealed that preliminary investigations by security agencies indicated that illegal miners had stored explosive devices in one of the houses in Bodija, leading to the blast.

Makinde assured the public that investigations were ongoing, stating, “All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”

To provide immediate relief, the governor issued directives that the medical bills of all victims be covered by the government.

He will also be providing “temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected and ensuring that they are supported to rebuild their lives.”

The security agencies and firefighters were promptly deployed to manage the aftermath of the explosion and rescue victims.

The National Emergency Management Agency revealed that over 20 houses were affected by the incident caused by a suspected Improvised Explosive Device.

A former deputy governor of Oyo State, Chief Iyiola Oladokun’s residence was among the affected houses.

His storey building, located not far from Dejo Oyelese Street, was significantly affected, and it remains uncertain if the foundation is stable.

The home of the late Chief Bola Ige, former Attorney General of the Federation, was also impacted by the explosion.

The building, located approximately 600 meters away from the Oladokuns, experienced shattered windows.
