I won’t abandon my carpentry skills for academics, says corps member who built furniture for students [Photos]

A corps member, Stephen Teru, who became an internet sensation after using his carpentry skills to build classroom furniture for students at his place of primary assignment has said he would not abandon the skill as he pursues more academic qualifications.

Teru shared photos of his works on his Facebook page a few days ago and the photos have since gone viral across social media platforms as Nigerians commend him for his gesture.

He had explained in the post that he built the classroom furniture for students in two public schools in the community in Cross Rivers State where he served.

The schools are – Community Secondary School and St. Georges Primary School in Old Netim, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The University of Jos graduate, who is overwhelmed by the traction his post has gained, shared other posts on his page where he stated that he would do more for the society and said he won’t abandon his carpentry skill as he plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in Zoology at his alma mater.

He wrote:

“To God be the glory! I volunteered my skill to produce desks, tables, benches and shelves for the comfort of over 80 students and pupils of the two public schools (Community Secondary School and St. Georges Primary School) in my host community -Old Netim, Akamkpa LGA. Cross River State.

“I must in a very special way appreciate the good people of the community for their support. Big thanks to my ever-supportive principal Mr Emmanuel Eni Sir, you are too much! My NYSC Inspector, Mr Ubong Effanga, thank you Sir! You’ve been a great source of motivation to us all. All my friends and colleagues, thanks for being there. My family at Jos, this is for you!”

In another post on his Facebook on Saturday, Teru said:

“One common question I get from most of the telephone interviews was: What about your skill (carpentry), are you throwing it away for further education? My answer: No!

“In short, my dream business is to build a multi-service rendering company with nationwide network and beyond, where skilled youths can get employed to provide services in all the various vocations that there is; carpenters, tailors, metalwork (welding), laundry and dry-cleaning, car wash and maintenance, events management, photography, ICT, dish installation, electrical wiring, tiling, painting, catering, just any skill.

“I also dream of training young people in the department of their choice in our company. And for charity, I’ve not even started.”
