Afrobeats star Fireboy DML has opened up about the challenges and responsibilities he faced growing up as the first child in his family.
Speaking during an appearance on the 90s Baby show, the singer shared how his role as the eldest shaped his sense of duty from a young age. He recalled a pivotal moment when he had to attend a public school so that his younger siblings could receive a private education.
“There was a time I had to go to public school so my siblings could go to private school. I heard the word ‘you have to be responsible’ for years. I think it comes naturally as a first born,” Fireboy DML said.
The singer reflected on how deeply ingrained the expectations were, especially when it came to caring for his siblings and maintaining the family’s reputation.
“You’re responsible for your siblings and upholding the family name. I didn’t become a ‘man’ until I left home and went to university. That was when I realized I was been shielded from a lot of things,” he added.
His remarks offer a rare glimpse into the personal sacrifices that shaped his early life and career journey.
